Optimal eddy viscosity for resolvent-based models of coherent structures in turbulent jets

چکیده

Response modes computed via linear resolvent analysis of a turbulent mean-flow field have been shown to qualitatively capture characteristics the observed coherent structures in both wall-bounded and free shear flows. To make such models predictive, nonlinear forcing term must be closed. Strategies do so include imposing self-consistent sets triadic interactions, proposing various source models, or through turbulence modelling. For latter, several investigators proposed using mean-field eddy viscosity acting linearly on fluctuation field. In this study, data-driven approach is taken quantitatively improve by deducing an optimal eddy-viscosity that maximizes projection dominant mode energy-optimal structure educed spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) data from high-fidelity simulations. We use large-eddy simulation databases for round isothermal jets at subsonic, transonic, supersonic conditions show substantially improves alignment between SPOD modes, reaching over 90% those frequencies where jet exhibits low-rank response. then consider fixed model with calibration single constant, results are generally close one. particular, standard Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, coefficient, provides substantial agreement three across most energetic wavenumbers frequencies.

Large eddy simulation of compressible turbulent jets

Increasing noise regulation at urban airports force jet engine manufactures to develop and build quieter engines. Over the last 10-15 years, a significant reduction in fan and mechanical noise has been achieved. However, the reduction in jet noise over the same time period is fairly small and a major reduction in acoustic emissions of jet engines has to come from a reduction in jet noise. Tradi...

Large Eddy Simulation of Variable Density Turbulent Axisymmetric Jets

Three cases of variable-density turbulent round jets discharging from a straight circular pipe into a weakly confined low-speed co-flowing air stream are studied with the aid of large eddy simulation. The density ratios considered are 0.14 [He/air], 1.0 [air/air] and 1.5 [CO2/air], with Reynolds numbers of 7000, 21000 and 32000, respectively. Detailed comparisons of the statistics show good agr...

Wavelet Analysis to Detect Multi-scale Coherent Eddy Structures and Intermittency in Turbulent Boundary Layer

In the early stage of turbulence study, turbulent flow was deemed fully random and disorder motions of fluid particles. Thus physical quantity describing turbulence was considered as the composition of random fluctuations in spatial and temporal field. Reynoldsう1895えdivided the turbulent field into mean field and fluctuating field and then theories and methods based on statistics for turbulence...
